Cheap Kitchen Backsplash

Still working on the kitchen redo. I wanted a back splash that was easy and cheap to install. I wanted something that looked retro'ish (Is that a word?) We have family visiting from out of state this weekend, so I didn't want to take on a huge project. What to do......what to do?

While shopping the kitchen aisle at a local discount department store I stopped when I seen some funky fun contact paper. hmmmmmmmmm' could it work? Worth a try at just $1.99 a roll. I purchased two rolls.

Photo of contact paper and kitchen back splash (or lack there of). I washed the walls and started working away.

Before

After

If you look above the window you can see I added some of the paper at the top.
(Note to self, buy new curtains).

Not bad for less than $5. It's easily removed, so if I tire of it anytime soon it's no big deal.

The great thing about using the contact paper is you can reposition it while hanging. I do have a few wrinkles in the paper here and there, nothing that noticeable. I did this in less than 30 minutes. I would suggest having someone helping you or cutting the paper in smaller sections, to make applying to wall and smoothing out easier.

Have a happy day

Kris

I just figured out what was missing. I need a Kitchenaide Artistry Mixer on the counter. If anyone would like to drop a hint to Phil that would be sweet. :)

Ha!!! My first apartment while in college had HORRIABLE wall paper in the kitchen!! I did this!!! Contact paper in white with green ivy all over it! The pattern was little so I did not even have to try an match things up! It looked so good the owner took a month rent off thinking I had done REAL wallpaper!! It was awesome!

Wow Kris. What a great idea for a backsplash. It looks amazing with that great pop of colors on the walls. Hard to believe all it took was a few rolls of just regular old contact paper.

What a fabulous idea, Kris!
I once used a plank of pine shelving, stenciled a flowering vine down its length, sealed it with waterproof varnish, and positioned it just above the counter top. It hid a multitude of sins as we were unable to repair the damaged walls beneath that had been coated with adhesive.
I also stenciled a matching vine on cotton curtains!
Your idea is so simple, easy, and cheap, too.
I just love it!

OMG-I feel like I just died and went to heaven! This is exactly what I need to do. I have been trying to save up to tile my kitchen backsplash, but you have come up with a much better idea-and cheap too. I know I have some cute contact paper lying around her somewhere. This is just the cat's meow!

You're right Nancy. I added the last photos a little later. Thought I should show a more complete and wider view of the kitchen. Your attention span is fine, for now!!

Hi! It looks great, congrats! I've been thinking about doing this and was wondering if you found it held up well to the heat & moisture from cooking?
All the best :)
